By that point, he has established himself as a proven author, known for his brutal and viscerally detailed battles, and has grown much over his career. Unlike many, my introduction with John Gwynne began with The Shadow of the Gods, his 8th novel. John Gwynne managed to do this very well for a debut author.

I found no such fault with Malice, though I've perhaps been conditioned too well by a certain Brandon Sanderson for me to ever have issues with a slow-burn pacing to start, provided there's payoffs by the end. One of the most common complaints I've seen from other readers is that there are too many characters named and introduced and too much going on that bogs down the first half of the book. All of it happens with characters easy to love, or hate, and a great deal of depth to them. Malice is a fantastic debut novel that delivers much of what it promises, bloody good action, mystical creatures, eerie antagonists, and political machinations. I am very excited to read more Gwynne after his amazing The Shadow of the Gods novel. My goal this year is to get through all 7 Banished Lands books (as well as Bloodsworn Saga #2). Here is a long review of Malice I posted on Goodreads.
